I am Merlijn Aarts, 15 years old and I have a side job at Modexpress as order picker.

I have been working at Modexpress since November 2020 and started during the Black Friday sale period when it was extremely busy, I really liked it. I got a contract after that period and have been working at Modexpress on weekends and vacations ever since.

I have been working at Modexpress since November 2020 and started during the Black Friday sale period when it was extremely busy, I really liked it. I got a contract after that period and have been working at Modexpress on weekends and vacations ever since.

When you start at Modexpress you usually start with packing orders, which is the easiest work and you quickly get the hang of it. When packing you get a crate via a conveyor, that crate contains an order from someone who ordered something online, it can be one item, but also a lot like 15 or 20 items. You first count all the items to see if the order is complete, then you pack all the garments in a bag together with the packing slip and the return label, you tape the bag and stick the shipping label on it and you’re done. So this is where it starts, once I learned this I got to go and sort, in sorting you scan items into the sorting cabinet. When one of the compartments light up you know where you can put the items.

Picking is the hardest part I have had to do so far, as an order picker I make sure that orders are collected; you get a scanner attached to your arm and then you have to collect all sorts of different types of items at certain locations, you combine all these items into a crate and the order is then ready to be packed at the packing tables.

I don’t have mandatory hours during the week because I’m still in school, so it’s not possible to combine this and work the whole week. I mainly work during the school vacations, because then I have a lot of time to work, usually I am there all day from 8:00 to 17:00. I also try to come to work on the weekends as often as possible, but I play soccer and the matches are always on Saturday afternoons, so I have less time to work on Saturdays, which I regret!  The coolest thing about this job is that you have a lot of contact with people.
